Four weeks ago we started travling from Berlin Northward. We passed the city of Sczcezin, boarded a ship in Świnoujście harbour. In part 3 we cycled through Denmark and reached Hirtshals in chapter 4. In chapter 5 the criss cross ferry cruise continues from Kristiansand on heading towards Oslo.
We crossed the Kattegatt with high expectation, hoping to chat with some Norwegian trolls, Scandinaviash ghosts, vikings or whale hunters. This will all be surpassed by what really happened…. join us travling along the coast to Norway’s Love Bridge and a little further from there.
That’s how cycles and cars travel on ships. I can tell you – that’s luxury. As passenger you hardly find a place to sit on the floor.
Seasick Capt’n Sickboy crossing the Kattegat.
Welcome to Kristiansand located on Norway’s Southcoast.
The landscape changed, weather stay the same. Cold rain is falling, thunders thundering and lightings playing with darkness and brigthness. Cycling is a pleasure… going uphill, away from the coast, down into an alley with trolls and ghosts.
Tell us a story and entertain us, the trolls are shouting If we like your story we will let you pass. While I was cycling through forests and rocks I am shouting and acting and whispering and laughing the story about the girl who traveled a million miles to meet the boy to tell him the story about the dragon and the buddhas and the gardens and the mountains and about India and the Journey to The West.
Trolls loved the story and that’s my reward…. I am being guided to this place. A German was hiding on the ship named Thetis from Riga to London. Due to thunderstorms and heavy raines the ship found this place as safe haven. Trapped in the storms and overwhelmed by the thunder and the noise, young Richard Wagner used the time to start a new era in theatre… he founded a way to bring the thunder on stage. And he included the thunder and the storm and the singing sailors in to music. Crash boooom BAAAANGG!
Wagner’s fans from all over the world come here on coaches and cars. They stand by the red house and scream the ride of the valkyres out of the sea. From far out the echo of the rocks answers their call. I stay two splendid nights in Helena’s house next to the ancient burial place of withches and demons.
Ferry #9 was a beauty. She is the oldest car ferry made of wood and is on duty ever since the first Volvo was brought onto Scandinavia’s streets.
Norway’s coast is a maze made of millons of islands and rocks.
It is only a jumb to cross a vally and a sund and a mountain and a small town to arrive at the next ferry port…
# 10th ferry’s name is Jesper. New Thunderstorm cloud are coming behind us…
… I ask the Jesper ferry man if this is the way to Oslo and he smiled… „you better find a place where to stay the night inside“.
Next day sun, YAY. Cycling become challanging, as the signs along the road changed into Harry Potter style riddles and spells.
She was not a beauty nor was she built to transport cars. But number 11 invided us to a pittoresk and relaxing and chatty crossing over.
It is nice, is it not??
That’s the place were old ferris go to sleep. We waved her and smiled.
That’s the passage the old ferry was traveling in her high times. The Love Sund is bridge by the love bru today. A good moment to dream… the next destination is reached.
Men vs. Beast…. For 2000 years Vikings were responsible for the world’s oil supply. Until today whaling is Norway’s natioal heritage. That’s how it looks when Vikings go out to hunt for world’s oil and meat supply. Whalers are sitting by the fountain and chat ‚bout their time out on the sea.
